How to… Take care of business

How to wear workwear like a boss.

We share the 11 must-haves.

DIRECTION Elle Glass @ ARCHFASHION, PHOTOGRAPHY James Mullins @ DLM FASHION & Nadene Duncan @ DLM, MODEL Karsyn @ Chadwick.

We’re lucky here at ARCH there’s no dress code (if there was, our ED would be in violation of it on a daily basis – hi Elle).  But that doesn’t mean we don’t know what’s going on. Whether your nine-to-five is in the corporate world, or you’re more in the creative realm, here are some failsafe options to keep on high rotation.

When it comes to workwear, there are some basic do’s and don’ts (because no one really wants to speak to HR). Cases in point:

Don’t – Go too short. Go sheer. Wear anything you can’t walk in (think super tight pencil skirts or crazy high heels). Wear anything with a slogan that could be construed as offensive. Show your underwear.

Do – Have a stable of pieces you feel confident in, that you can totally own. Keep your basics in good order. Yes, this means making nice with your dry cleaner.

The must-haves - What are they?

The hold-everything tote.
Chances are this needs to fit your laptop, gym gear and a spare change of clothes just in case that Tinder date pulls through.

A suit. Faux or otherwise.
A solid blazer and pant set is always a winner. Just ask Karl Stefanovic.

Neutral basics.
Make sure you have plenty of neutrals. Whites, tans, greys, blacks. You know the drill. These are the pieces that are easy to mix and match with statement pieces.

A trench.
Until you’ve owned one, you can’t quite appreciate what a miracle worker this piece is. This is the ultimate cover-all, the modern workday moo moo if you will. Throw it over just about anything to pull your look together. We love the combo of a pencil skirt, T-shirt, tote and sneakers with the trench, but also something a little more classic  like tailored pants, a simple shirt and work-ready pumps.

The one-tone pullover.
Air conditioning and old mate El Nino play havoc with temperature. Something warm is always a must. Go for a block colour with a little extra room so you can pull it over shirts or whatever else you’ve chosen to run with that day.

A fancy flat.
Heels are great. They make your legs look amazing. Etc etc etc. But seriously – all day long? Forget about it. Invest in a good pair of flats. Trust us, your feet will thank you for this each and every day.

A statement skirt.
We love a pencil skirt or a patterned A-line number. If you like block colours, always go for a texture or an interesting shape. Tuck your top in or wear it loose and long. Great way to make those basics feel fresh.

The ankle boot.
Sometimes it rains. And sometimes it rains A LOT. Boots aren’t just for winter – they’re a transeasonal staple because who seriously trusts Apple weather anyway? Boots are perfect no matter the terrain – be it busy city streets, on set or just kicking around at all those fake meetings you’ve got in the diary.

The culotte.
These are the eat-as-much-as-you-like option and a firm favourite at ARCHFASHION HQ. It’s pyjama dressing with a twist. The best thing? The tailoring makes you look like you’ve made an effort but in reality they’re more comfortable than joggers.

The white shirt.
We’ve told you about this one a million times. Look for a not so basic button down top, or keep it classic.

The token office warmer.
OK so there has to be one thing you leave on the back of your chair (or for the freelancers: in the back of your car) to keep you toasty when caught unawares. We love chunky knit cardies. Remember you have to be ready at all times for an unannounced client pop in (read: striking gold on Happn) so make sure it’s a goodie.
