“I do” with a twist

How to elope? Pros and cons.

And, how to keep it hush hush.

The average Australian wedding costs $65K. WTAF? That’s a legit salary for an entire year. Never mind the emotional cost of planning, getting seating arrangements right (with requests from friends like, “Please don’t put me next to Gary, it’s a long story, but there’s a story.”) Shoot us now!

If the idea of spending a small fortune in one day makes you break out in hives, or you find the idea of picking flowers that represent “your love” nauseating, a traditional “I do” wedding might not be for you.

Eloping crossed your mind? Like when your mother threw a hissy fit because you don't want to invite your cousin’s uncle’s grandfather’s son? But here’s the gospel truth: wedding bells can still ring for you. Just maybe a little quieter. Here are the facts:

Why Elope?

So many reasons:

‘Cause you want it to be “just the two of us”. #romance4eva

  • You ain’t got the funds.
  • Overwhelmed by all the decision making.
  • Avoid the hassle and expense of mega wedding planning.
  • Saving to buy a house.

Where to elope?

Destination weddings we’re looking at you! The beauty of eloping is that you can have your wedding anywhere. Literally. And you don’t have to worry about friends and family saying “it’s too expensive for us to travel”. You're not asking them to.

Who gets to come?

Breaking news: eloping doesn’t have to mean it's just the bride, groom, and a witness. You can have whoever you want along. You can have your nearest and dearest with you on the day - think, besties, grandma and grandpa, even your furry friend. The choice is totally yours.

No big, fat wedding dress?

Want to get married in Jeans? Cool. Want to wear the most Cinderella dress ever? Totes fine. That’s the beauty of eloping - it’s all you! Besides, you can spend more on a dress when you don’t have to feed 200 people who are all going to complain about the meals anyway.

Costs

Yep, this one is on the bride and groom too. If you’re eloping to avoid the $50K price tag wedding, then you can control where your money goes. Whether it’s a beach ceremony on Byron Bay, or a Santorini elopement, you control the spending.

Pros

  • Less expensive on all fronts.
  • You make all the decisions (well, you and Mr.Groom)
  • Less planning = less stress
  • No randoms at the wedding - only VIPs present
  • You can get married anywhere you want
  • More intimate

Cons

  • Not all your friends and family are there - they might get offended
  • You don’t get to be “princess” for the day
  • Fewer gifts
  • Less extravagant
  • Only mr photographer and you guys - no one else to take photos so you’re dependant on one person to snap the perfect shots
  • Less witnesses for the memories
