Breakfast of champions

Beer with coffee, maple syrup and pork.

The most random global breakfast choices we dare you to order.

Source: @platformeightytwo

Breakfast is said to be the most important meal of the day, but poached eggs on toast can get old real fast. So, what should you  be reaching for in the morning? We take a gastro tour of the world to bring you the best and the most bizarre breakfast cuisines.

It’s time to surprise your special sleepover friend with an extra special breakfast.

Waffles (… with Chicken)

Where you’ll get it… New York

Talk about food porn. Dreams, it seems, really do come true in NYC. Fork free chicken in a waffle cone from a truck? Yes please. For just under $6, the Chick' N Cone Food Truck will ensure you start your day just right. Find them between W. 25th Street and Broadway.

Hair of the dog: breakfast beer

Where you’ll get it… the USA.

When it comes to beer, it’s never too early. Every hour is beer o’clock.

There’s a steak in every beer, or so we convinced ourselves as we spent what little money we had in uni on one after the other. And now, some genius has put a breakfast in every beer. Introducing Dogfish Brewing Co’s Breakfast stout. Tricked out with the goodness of traditional breakfast ingredients, with each sip you’ll get a taste of Guatemalan Antigua cold press coffee, maple syrup and pork scrapple. We know what we’re having for brunch.

Better than penicillin: corn with fungus

Where you’ll get it… Mexico

You know when you’re on foreign soil and you don’t speak the language so you just point at the menu hoping it’s a winner and not blood sausage?

Huitlacoche – black corn – is the former. Sure, technically it’s diseased corn, a fungus that’s considered to be delicacy in Mexico. It tastes kind of like mushrooms (thanks largely to the spores that infect the corn) and is an A-grade mushroom filling.

Leftovers: relive the joy of Tuesday’s dinner all over again

Where you’ll get it… Your hometown (oh, and also: Bondi)

OK, so this one’s home-grown but we’ve got the secret to spicing up your breakfast life. Put. It. On. Toast.

Spaghetti? Toast. Pizza? Toast (it’s called carb-loading people). In Sydney’s most hipster suburb, there’s even a whole café based on this premise.

The new porridge: Congee

Where you’ll get it… China

Porridge is so 18th century. If you’re looking for the multi-cultural twist on this, head to China. There you’ll find porridge-like congee – it’s slow-cooked rice – topped with a century egg.  The egg, thanks to being a few weeks (and, sometimes months) old, has a green yolk and smells a touch like sulfur. Super healthy though.
