How to quit sugar and get back on track

Easter is over and so is your excuse for chocomania (cue the doomsday music). If you’re looking at your bin full of Cadbury Creme Egg wrappers and worrying about your chocolate coma to come - then stop right there. Don’t reach for that Cherry Ripe to pick-you-up again. 

It’s time to detox the choc after a fun few days of indulge. We’ve got the health remedies to get you back on track after the bunny hops to town and kick the sugar cravings. 

Shake up your wake up

Start your day with a plate full of veggies, protein and fats, recommends health guru Sarah Wilson - and she should know she wrote a whole book about it. I Quit Sugar anyone? By kick-starting your digestion with a nutrient dense meal you will be less likely to get an energy slump and crave that cheeky 3pm snack. 

Always in a rush early morn? Try a brekky smoothie. The perfect meal on-the-go (hint: click through for recipe!).  

Keep hydrated

So simple guyz. No excuses. Thirst can often be mistaken for hunger or better known as those pesky sugar cravings, so before you take a bite out of that leftover caramel-filled egg - drink up. Juice or cola doesn’t count. Make it 100% H2o. 

Detox the retox

Cure it all with this tonic. Made up of five easy ingredients: lemon, ginger, turmeric, cayenne pepper and cinnamon (add hot water obvs). By removing toxins, increasing antioxidants, enhancing digestion and boosting immunity you can say adios to that sugar comedown. 

Plus, with it’s focus on improving your gut health - this is a dream remedy for those post-Easter blues when your tummy is not happy. Drink up any time of the day. 

Home brew

There’s nothing a good cuppa tea can’t fix. For every ailment you’ll be sure to find a brew that heals your problem. Liquorice tea is especially sweet and great for curbing sugar cravings by maintaining healthy blood-sugar levels. 

Then we have the good old dandelion tea trick which also kicks that chocolate fix but boosts your metabolism and flushes the kidneys too. 

If it’s something creamy you’re after - try your dandelion in a LSD (latte of soy and dandelion). Also works as a good coffee alternative. 


Fun fact for today: ironically foods that promote low fat contain more sugar. Our green friend the avocado luckily is not in that category. On the other hand avocado is full of high-fat health (only the good kind). 

All the omega-3 fatty acids inside this strange fruit work to improve our mood, reduce stress and boost concentration. All the things we tend to turn to chocolate for a short fix. So sit back and enjoy your smashed avo on toast.

Shake it off

Don’t ever regret the choc! What’s done is done. Instead of going all bad-ass gym junkie to avoid the guilt, channel Taylor Swift and shake it off at your own pace and take a walk. 

Even our fave trainer Kayla Itsines loves a good LISS (Low Intensity Steady State cardio). She’s all for taking your dog for a walk, or listening to music so it doesn’t feel like a chore. 

Bonus: lower intensity is great for burning those calories aka the Easter treats you couldn’t say no to and it’s a great way to de-stress and chillax.
