5 women to watch at the Australian Open: look out Serena Williams

Dust to side chicks?

We’ll see from Monday.

“I’m sorry / I ain’t sorry.”

Serena Williams now wears an engagement ring fit for a tennis queen thanks to fiance Alexis Ohanian, Reddit’s co-founder.  But will she shine bright like a diamond come this year’s Australian Open?

From writhing alongside Beyonce in last year’s Lemonade extravaganza, to a whirlwind romance, the 21-time Grand Slam singles champion has her sights set on the Australian Open. Kicking off in Melbourne on Monday, there is some hot competition - hot in every sense of the word.

So, who is Serena up against? Will there be dust to side chicks? Only Monday will tell.

Her Instagram reads, “Professional at tennis and shopping” so, to us, she’s already a winner. Off court, she loves a slouchy knit with a blue jean.  Nicknamed ‘The Magician’, this leggy brunette makes what would be otherwise considered impossible shots, was a semi-finalist at last year’s Open.

She’s had wins in Madrid, Montreal and her hometown of Bucharest, and now Romania’s Simona Halep is one to watch. She made the quarterfinals in 2015. With Lleyton Hewitt’s former coach Darren Cahill by her side, she’s a very real threat. When not playing, she keeps the sports luxe feel going with clean-line trackwear

Tall with tatts, she’s not one to mess with. In 2015 she made her moves, finishing as world number 11. Last year she made the US Open Final only to hand the prize to Angelique Kerber. With a twin sister also on the tennis circuit, this game is in her blood. When not on the grass, she keeps it casual with slogan t-shirts, shorts and sneakers.

This is not the blonde Slovak’s first Australian Open, but she’s hoping it will be one she can make a mark on. Once fifth in the world, she’s got her eye on the prize.

Oh and in case she gets distracted, she’s got a fallback: her own sportswear line on the side.

Off court, her style is super chic and she’s unafraid of a lift selfie.

She’s the defending champion and ranked Number One in the world. With a smile that can stop traffic, she’s this year’s top seed. Look out Serena. When not in the game, she’s kicking back in sweats.
