Catching up for some fun, fashion tips and facts with designer Genevieve Er.
Q: Let’s cast our minds back to where it all began for you. What was your first role in the fashion industry and how did it come about?
GE: I was in University working in a clothing shop. Every time new stock would come in I would spend all my pay on clothes, wasn’t really a good start for my bank balance!
Q: In your opinion what is the worst ever fashion trend you’ve been exposed to?
GE: I don’t know whether it has ever been a trend and I cant understand why they exist, Bikini G-strings. Yuck!
Q: What are your favourite shops in Aus?
GE: Too many to list! I love shopping a little too much so I can be found canvassing them all, the markets, the boutiques and the department stores the online stores.
Q: Not everyone can afford a wardrobe full of designer labels. What advice would you give for someone on a budget?
GE: Save for one really good statement piece per season, then mix and match it with affordable fashion labels. There are a lot of really well made budget labels, look for quality finishes and fits. I also try to hand wash, it keeps the shape and appearances longer.
Q: Which designers would you like to collaborate with/ have you liked collaborating with in the past?
GE: I would love to collaborate with Karl Lagerfeld now that would be a dream come true.
Q. How do stay up to date with trends, designers, fabrics and colours?
GE: Partly through research. This can be through the web, publications etc. The other part is from your own gut feeling, then trial and error, testing to see what looks right.
Q: What for you is exciting in the fashion world today?
GE: Haute couture, I always get a buzz seeing the collections, I marvel at the amount of work they put into one garment, they are really the artists of the industry.
Q: Describe the typical Genevieve Er girl? How do you intend them to feel when wearing your clothing?
GE: I hope that they feel good about themselves, are confident, fun and feeling beautiful.
Q What’s your favourite piece this season? Do you have an all time favourite piece you designed?
GE: For this season my favourite piece would be the “conscience killer “dress. My Favourite piece all time out fit was a bustier, with a pleated leather skirt and blazer, which I did for spring summer 2 years ago.
Q: What is your favourite men’s label?
GE: I don’t really look at the brand names for men, I like men to looks classic and not overdone.
Q: What is something that people might not know about you?
GE: I have a double-jointed thumb and it can do really gross things.
